September is the ideal time to conduct a thorough inspection of the hen house – before autumn is fully here and temperatures drop. A well-maintained coop ensures both animal welfare and stable egg production.

Check the Structure

Go through the coop from top to bottom:

• Look for holes, cracks or loose boards that need repair
• Check that the roof and walls are sealed against wind and moisture
• Inspect the ventilation holes – they should be open but not create drafts
• Ensure the roof is sturdy enough to hold snow later on

Lighting and Daylight

With shorter days, natural light decreases. Many farmers install artificial lighting to maintain egg production. A lamp providing 12-14 hours of daylight per day helps hens continue laying through autumn and winter.
