Many who buy fresh quail eggs from us through the summer are surprised to hear that September actually brings an increase in production. After the heat from July and August has subsided, our quails open up again.

At Den Lille Hagen in Fjære, we see this pattern year after year: summer quiet, then suddenly full baskets with small, speckled eggs again.

What Happens Biologically?

Quails respond strongly to day length and temperature. When the temperature drops and days become shorter, their bodies interpret this as a signal that autumn is here – and often also that it's time for reproduction. Moreover, the lower heat means the energy they use to regulate their body fluids decreases, so the rest can be used for egg production.

Optimal Nutrition for Autumn Eggs

For quails to perform their best, it's important to have:

• Balanced feed with high protein content
• Access to clean water – even more important when the coop is less ventilated
• Variations in light conditions that reflect natural rhythms

Here in the Agder region, we also have the advantage that September weather is often stable and not too warm – perfect for small birds like quails. The result? Fresh quail eggs that are both larger and more nutritious than summer eggs.
